Mr. Cortes graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a minor in Business Administration. He earned his Juris Doctor cum laude, with a certificate in Intellectual Property Law, from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. While in law school, Mr. Cortes was a Patent Fellow at the University of Florida Office of Technology Licensing. He established a moot court team to participate in the annual American Intellectual Property Law Association Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court Competition, dealing exclusively with patent-related issues. Mr. Cortes was also selected as one of twenty-five Hispanic law students nationwide to participate in an immersive Intellectual Property program hosted by the Hispanic National Bar Association and Microsoft Corporation in Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining Lott & Fischer, Mr. Cortes completed an externship at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Virginia, where he worked under the supervision of primary patent examiners to examine and issue office actions to patent applications in the automotive art unit.
