Ms. Lott will speak at the Dade County Bar Association Seminar, “Climb the Pillars to Success by Fitting Professionalism into the Profession” on Friday, September 9. The seminar will be held at the Hyatt Regency Miami, located at 400 S.E. 2nd Avenue, from 8:00 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.

She will moderate a panel on “Professionalism Past, Present, and Future: A Call to Action” which will include past Florida Bar President Edward Blumberg, current President William Schifino, and Florida Bar President-Elect Michael Higer. The panel will analyze the importance of civility and professional conduct in the practice of law.

The scope will include a primer on the scope of professionalism and civility, the intersection between professionalism and legal ethics, and a brief history of modern treatment of professionalism by the Bar. Personal observations from the panel on the aspirational and practical aspects of professionalism and civility will be introduced, and will be developed throughout the day, culminating in the luncheon presentations. The topics for this session will include:

  • the unsustainability of rudeness and incivility in the life of a lawyer (emphasizing the negative personal impact on lawyers who act unprofessionally);
  • exposing the fallacy that aggressive tactics demonstrate legal ability or achieve results (unprofessional behavior is the opposite of good lawyering);
  • the power of professionalism in elevating one’s credibility with judges; and
  • civility as a practical tool to establish and improve one’s relationships with opposing counsel.
